Siobhan Julian’s hints and tips for super, smart and healthy smoothies:
-
Always choose organic ingredients to be sure of fresh, healthy food that is free from additives, pesticides and artificial fertilizers.
-
Add ice cubes to make your smoothie extra cold.
-
If you don’t have fresh fruit, frozen fruit is a good alternative, retaining most of the nutrients. Plus it helps to keep the smoothie extra chilled.
-
When watching your weight, opt for low fat yogurt and low fat or skimmed milk. The good news is that this doesn’t affect the calcium content.
-
Artificial sweeteners offer a low calorie alternative to sugar and honey if you’re counting the calories. But our advice is to use natural sugar and honey where possible and just keep an eye on the quantity!
-
Add seeds to your smoothie for an extra health boost. Pumpkin seeds and linseeds are a great source of protein and omega 3.
-
Keeping the skin on certain fruits like pears, apples and kiwis when you blend them means extra fibre in your smoothie. But do peel the bananas first!
-
Don’t be afraid to play around with your smoothie and experiment with ingredients. Smoothies are delicious, nutritious and ultra flexible.
