Sugar in Children's Cereals

Consumers Association of Ireland Study into Childrens Cereal

A 2007 survey of children’s and adult cereals by the Consumers Association of Ireland has revealed that only a very small number can be considered healthy. All 36 children’s cereals failed the test of being high in fibre and low in sugar, salt and saturated fat, and two thirds of these contain at least 30 per cent sugar. Among the worst offenders in terms of sugar content were Kellogg's Frosties and a number of own brand cereals with chocolate flavoured coating. Of 51 adult cereals surveyed, just eight could be considered healthy including Weetabix and all the brands of porridge considered.
